2006 ML350 Tailgate won't close.

Hi, I own a 2006 ML350, I'm trying to diagnose my automatic tailgate but need some help. From the fob or the switch on drivers door panel I can get the tailgate to open, but not close. I went and ordered a new hatch lock assembly that arrived today, I installed it and nothing , the problem persists. So now its the SAM controller or hatch motor pump right? When I try to close it I just get beeping for a few seconds like the motor wants to go but doesn't.

Read the fault codes in the computer first before you go spending any money on parts! Just blinding buying parts is like playing Whack-a-Mole.

Use a scanner that understands MB codes and can read all the subsystems, like this one. Use a scanner that understands MB codes and can read all the subsystems, like this one.
Or take it to a dealer or independent shop with a Star Diagnosis system.

Flybd5 is correct, but in the meantime remove the spare tire and everything else, including the gray mat in the cargo, and you will see the tailgate hydraulic pump and the tailgate control module and you will probably find water damage to either or both, especially at the pump connector..

Easy Fix

Just clean the latch with any cleaner spray and manually push and pull on the tongues a few times until the spring does the job.
