Camera Inop

I have a 2009 ML350 4Matic, and yesterday (about 90k miles) the back-up camera stopped working. When shifted into reverse, the COMAND screen is just black. I understand it's about $700 alone for parts for the camera, but we had an 06 Range Rover that had a bad camera and we decided to not fix it because the camera was fine, but the wiring was damaged and the whole headliner would have to be dropped to repair it. So my questions is: is there any way to diagnose what is causing the camera to be inoperable, and maybe fix it myself? So far I have not tried anything in terms of diagnostics.

I looked at this thread and banged on the chrome strip above the camera while the car was in reverse, and it now works.

I can't imagine it will work very much longer, so how much/what is the part number for this connector behind the strip?

Call the dealer. A lot easier and faster than waiting for an answer here.

If you had a scanner you would be able to read the codes.

Hmm. What will the scanner say? "Computer says to bang on the chrome strip."

I do have a scanner, but I feel like that's too sensitive of an issue to be read by the car's computer. I'll check it on Monday.

What scanner do you have? It needs to be able to read all the systems in the car, and most run-of-the-mill garden variety scanners can't do that.
This one can, for example. This one can, for example.
