2008 Ml320 CDI tick/knock under load

hello all, looking for opinions on this sounds. 2008 ML320 CDI with om642 engine. Quick history, bought this summer (2018) engine had the actuator code, so pulled off the actuator and soldered a new connection, problem solved, also had the famous timing chain sound at start up, new chain and tensioner, problem solved.

Now fast forward to today, which I believe this sound has always been present but I chalked it up to the timing chain as well. It’s a tapping/knock under load, kinda sounds like either valve train, transmission or maybe main bearings? No idea where to start with this one looking for some guidance. Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention it only happens when the engine is 100% up to operating temp. Not audible when cold.

Anybody?? Kinda sounds like an exhaust leak but I’ve had a quick look but don’t see any black any where obvious.

2006 ML320 CDI (2 of) and 2008 GL320
Ho many KM/Miles on car?

What is the engine oil like? Is it too thin when HOT?

I am in Australia and use 5w40 but unsure if BC would be way cooler (now) and would actually help thicken the oil (reducing the chance of this being issue)

Do you think the noise is every rev, or every second rev? One tappet should be every second rev

sorry this advice is very qualitative and non specific to OM642 engine
