ML 350 Balance shaft diagnosis.
Another balance shaft question! (Yes I have read all the threads!)Is there a way to accurately detect the worn balance shaft of a 2006 ML350 rather than just reading the codes. Is there a boroscope method of seeing the sprocket or a panel to remove to actually see it? I have had one diagnosis of timing chain stretch and a one diagnosis of worn sprocket at fault. The engine is within the VIN of the fault but has only shown the codes at 153000 miles, I have removed the timing sensors and the timing marks are not aligned. I would like to try and get a visual diagnosis of the problem rather than paying for a timing chain when the sprocket is worn, or removing the engine when it is just the chain.A timing chain may be $2500 but then might also need a sprocket, a sprocket is $5500 but would be a big expense if they take the engine out, strip it only to find the sprocket is ok. The higher number of miles before the CEL came on is the straw I am clinging to, besides that it might not be worth the cost of the engine out of course. Any ideas?
I am in aviation and boroscopes are of course used a great deal, I know space is tight but scopes are pretty small now.
Anyone know a shop that would do the repair in West Michigan? Regards,
Michigan.
