Auto Headlights Stay on During the Day

I have a 2008 ML350.96k miles

I have an issue where when in auto mode the headlights and tail lights stay on even during the day. The green light stays on in the dash. The lights still auto turn off when the car is turned off.

The light sensor is working because the radio panel dims and changes from light to dark display properly if i go into a tunnel or any day / night lighting conditions. The temperature and rain sensor seems to be working properly and I believe they are all in the same place near the rear view mirror.

car has 96k. miles

I recently had the windshield replaced, could this be involved?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, to replace the windshield, the Overhead Control Panel must be removed. The OCP houses the rain/light sensor.

Does the center console nav / radio / backup camera screen use the same light sensor as the headlights? That unit is dimming and changing color properly depending on the lighting so whatever light sensor that is using it is working for sure.

Not according to this PDF, but anything is possible. Everything depends how careful the installer was.

According to that PDF there is one light sensor, so the center console screen dimming (changing from white background with black text to black background with white text) based on light must be using that sensor as well as the headlights.

And the center console screen dimming I mention is working perfectly while the auto headlights are not.

Sounds like your daytime running lights are working how they should

Hey mate. There are two options in the menu for auto day lights. One is called constant which turns the headlights with the start of the engine and turn the back lights only when the sensor detects that is dark. No matter which position is the switch ( 0/ auto/ on) This is preferred use in some countries if you dont have the day light LEDs. The other option is to turn the headlights on only when is darker outside. All these settings could be find in your light control menu from the dash.
