Oil Pressure Guage project ML63 (M156)

2008 ML63 AMG 6.3l -
I am working on adding a Oil Pressure gauge to my ML63. Mercedes decided that oil pressure was not something that did not need to be watched on a high performance AMG engine. So, I am working on adding a small gauge. The first thing was to figure out where on the engine you could add one. I got the idea from the great youtube mechanic Tasos Moschatos who pointed out the port on the oil filter housing. I got a used Oil Filter housing off of ebay to work things out before install.

What I need help with now is figuring out where to pass the gauge wires into the engine compartment. The oil pressure sending is electrical and will be mounted to the side of the vale cover. Any ideas of ether a good pass point or unused wires on a harness that would go to the cabin?

UPDATE: Finished...
Wires were passed through on the passengers side main wire harness grommet. The gauge harness was extended a lot and piggy back along some of the engine harness. Power for the gauge needs a +12V (switched/fused) power and ground, so it was tied into the back of one of the 12v accessory outlets. The gauge has a flashing visual alarm that you can set, but it is for high pressure only.

XRP 403812 - Short Neck 12mm Banjo to -3 Male - Steel
XRP 705003 - -3 Straight to 1/8 NPT Gauge Fitting - Steel
XRP 630008 - Straight -3 to Straight -3 Hose Assembly - 8"
m12x1.5 banjo bolt
Mini oil gauge from ebay.
There are many other brands of fittings you could use, but XRP is what my local speed shop carries. Another thing I did was the gauge was brighter than I liked so I cut some extra window tint film and slipped it into the gauge face over the LEDs. (Dry)

Thanks!

Was there any thread in the vale cover present or you needed to cut one?

The oil sensor will just sit there by the valve cover or you could zip tie the line. There is threads in the oil filter housing. Remove the cap covered by the coolant hoses.

This is an awesome idea, I will also be doing this. Why this isn't a standard feature is beyond me, oil pressure is extremely important.

When you get it done, post a picture. The more people see it can be done, the more likely it will be done. I would love to see this become a common mod.

You think this could be done without removing the oil filter housing?

Yes, I only had one to figure out the fittings. You will need to move the hoses in front to get access, but they go back in place. The loose housing was something I could take into my local "speed/racing shop" and have the guy find the fittings needed. The running of the wires from the cabin is what will take the time. My gauge is still running great and I am glad I did the project.

This is on a C63 track only build. It's pretty tight down there for line placement. It could petty much only go in one spot for me because of the fittings I used.

Vibrant Single Male Banjo Adapter Assembly; Banjo Size: -3AN; Bolt Size: M12 x 1.5
Vibrant 1/8" NPT Female x -3AN Male Flare Adapter
Russell ENDURA UNIVERSAL BRAKE HOSE STRAIGHT -3 AN TO STRAIGHT -3 AN 9" PN:656012

What sort of oil pressures was everyone seeing?

Cold start idle ~72psi
Lowest idle after a track session ~17psi (warn set at 14.5psi)

On track I want to say it was always between 45-90psi

Question

When you guys did this, did you do it during an oil change or just remove the plug and catch any oil that seeped out?

Just wondering if I can do this on a cold engine without having to drain any oil.

Also, seems like that banjo bolt sits awfully close to the belt. Anyone have any clearance issues? Mine is an 2009 SL63.

THanks and Merry Christmas
