Would you replace or fix this nail on your tire ?

2009 w164 ml350.

Had these tire for 5 years and only 25k miles in them. Still have about 6/32" left in middle groove. But only 4.5/32 in far most outer groove. This car gets about 4K to 5k miles per year only.

I got hit with this nail yesterday and I patched it myself just now as I gotta take kids to school.

This is not side wall but the length of the nail is what worries me. As you can see it was all the way in. When I unplugged it, it's about 4" Long....

I am going into a 7 hours road trip in 2.5 weeks and if I am going to replace the tires, I want to do it now.

Would you patch or replace ?

Thanks

The best repair for any flat tire is the patch repair.

The nail is too close to the sidewall for my liking. You'd, at least, have to remove the tyre from the rim, to carefully inspect for internal damage.

So, I'd replace the tyre, in fact both of them on the same axle, in case you upset the speed sensors.

Are you plugging or patching as it looks like plug in pics..

They should patch and be ok...I would still drive if tread is good no dry rot and not racing...

Check your spare before your go... of course...

Also when you get back start looking for next set of tires....

Dundee,

im in the same situation. I have 2001 ML320 and my tires only have 10k on them and I believe I have 7/32 thread left. My rear driver side tire got puncture and they can’t fixed therefore I was forced to buy a new tire. Will it affect my suspension or should I be ok? Do I need to have tire shaved to the same thread or can I set a lower PSI for this tire? Any advice?

If all of your tires a worn down that far, replace all of them.
