Esi programing

I'm getting a new esi for my 09 ML 350.to go with the new key. I had a generic key programed to my truck but it wouldn't unlock the doors. Dealership said I have to get a new esi to go with the factory key. So my question is once I get the new esi can I put it in my self. Trying to save 380. Or is it some other programing that needs to be done. I'm hoping it's a plug and play situation.

What do you mean by "a generic key" ? Please post a photo of this key.
