My tailgate sometimes doesn't close either when pressing the button the tailgate or the remote. What happens is there is an audible "DING" and I expect the tailgate to close but sometimes it stays open and I need to press the button once again to have it close.
This started about 6 months ago. This is a 2011 ML350.

Anyone else experience this?

You should look for rain water in the spare tire compartment. The rear SAM, tailgate pump and the tailgate module are located there.
