Revving issue

My 2008 ML320 CDI is acting up when I gas it. When I知 driving appropriately and diligently, I知 not having any issues at all. However, when I知 in a pinch and need to floor it, typically from an idle position at a red light or such, the transmission doesn稚 engage and very loud, persistent ticking/knocking/clanking sound bellows out from her until I ease off the gas a bit and proceed gingerly. Again, it mostly happens in 1st gear, but it has happened in other gears as well. Is this the start of a major issue or is there something I can do to remedy the issue (aside from not punching it)?

If I were you, I would first change the two engine air filters using Mann ones - C27006 & C25004 and see the results.
