P2016 Error Code

Hi friends,

After experiencing heavy tropical rain, my ML started to show error "2016" early in the morning.

An old Maj, Dundee's post shows that 2016 could be:

2016 - [1] Rail pressure monitoring via volume control valve The rail pressure is too high
2016 - [2] Rail pressure monitoring via volume control valve The pressure reduction during deceleration is implausible.
2016 - [4] Rail pressure monitoring via volume control valve Standard deviation in deceleration mode
2016 - [8] Rail pressure monitoring via volume control valve Standard deviation in idle

The error is cleared with an ICarsoft MB II and the CEL light no longer appears during the day, returning only the next morning.

The car is a ML 350 2009/2010 CDI, and is with 210,000 km. The morning temperature is about 21º C.

Any suggestions on what should be checked? Where/What is the "volume control valve"?

I'm having a problem with Xentry, will get back to you this afternoon.

In the mean time, check for codes in all modules.

Locate relay D-KD in fuse-relay box F58.

With the key out of the ign. remove KD relay clean all prongs with steel wool then insert the relay and remove it again. Do this 5-6 times and see if the problem is gone. Before driving you must delete the codes.

Hello Dundee,

Thanks (again) for the post, but why are you suggesting I remove the relay?

Is there any connection of this relay with "Rail pressure monitoring"?

Xentry suggested that it be checked.and appears in the rail pressure monitoring. Do you think I had nothing to do and just picked this relay for laughs?

Do the suggestion or not.

Hello Maj. Dundee,

Thank you for confirming that this is in the Xentry recommendations. But I still thinks it's kind of weird because it's a pressure issue!

Anyway I opened the fuse box. It was completely dry and the relay contacts were in good condition.

As it is a pressure problem, I decided to check the valve and the temperature sensor of the high-pressure pump.

I was able to see that the electrical connectors of the 2 components were very dirty. Then I cleaned both with WD40 and an eletric contact cleaner.

This morning the car did not exhibit the problem. I believe the same has been resolved.

It remains to be seen whether the problem was caused by the valve, the temperature sensor, or both.
