Steering Firmness

Hi folks. New here. I'm considering a purchase of a very nice 2006 ML350. I was driving it today for my first time in a Mercedes SUV, and I noticed I had to make a bit more input into steering than I'm used to with the power steering of other vehicles. My Nissan X-Trail, for example, seemed lighter than the Mercedes. I realize different factors affect steering, like tire type (Continental Grabbers) and body weight, but does that sound typical for this vehicle? I'd say single handed driving takes a somewhat firm effort vs the typical finger-tip with smaller vehicles. I don't have any reason to believe there are power steering leaks or failure. It has 164000 ks on it. The car has been kept clean and not used for off-roading.

Thanks very kindly if anyone can provide an experience perspective on this.

Paul

Please update your profile to include the year, model (is it GAS, CDI or Blue) and where you live.

No you haven't, you did not indicate what 350 you have, CDI, Blue or gas.

Mercedes power steering is by design not feather light.

a pre purchase inspection by someone familiar with Mercedes could be a good investment.

Paul, you must check for codes in the ESP control module with a scanner, a code reader will not do. Close attention for highlighted codes on page 6 & 7.

Maj is absolutely right. If the abs traction is in fault (or being scanned) the steering assistance acts like it is at high speed and does not assist as much.

there is a valve on the steer rack head which operates the variable assistance.

no funny messages on the display like it is in dyno mode or something?

Sorry for a delayed response on this. My steering stiffness was a combination of inappropriate steering fluid, low fluid and a steering pump that is still functioning, but could use replacing in the not too distant future. It is better than it was, and my new and experienced Mercedes mechanic feels the steering isn't far off what is to be expected.

Thanks very much to all who replied.

All Good - Hopefully it works out - I have ML320 with more than 310000km (original pump) and really only light pressure to turn wheel (I would even call it over assisted) - pump could be damaged if fluid dropped too far. hOW BIG ARE THE WHEELS? i HAVE 235/65 SO NARROW (LESS RESISTANCE)

Cheers. I have 255/55s on original 18" rims. Dueler H/Ps. They were a touch underinflated when I got the car, so that would have been a contributor as well. I would definitely say the steering isn't light, even now. It's manageable with one hand, but two hands are easier around corners, especially at slow speeds. My mechanic says the slow-speed valve definitely kicks in, but I've had occasions after turning the engine on and just starting out when it takes a moment to kick in. It also doesn't appear to be leaking. Probably just a tired pump.
