So, the two W164 steering rack rubber bushings are shot. The passenger side takes 60 seconds. The 5-6" bolt comes right out.

On the driver's side, there is a transfer case in the way. The bolt cannot be removed. Is there an amazing trick to avoid taking the whole transfer case out, please?

same issue, last week i go to repair shop for replace rack bushes. They said they couldn't remove the driver side bolt, they said they had to remove the whole transfer case. i searched on the internet and found out that they cut the driver side bolt, buy new bolt and put it on the other side. M10x85 or M10x90 bolt is enough.

original bolt code is "N000000004019"

Solved. There is a youtube video. You cut the bolt. You buy another one M10 X 1.50 X 90mm extra strength 10.9 steel.. you put it in BACKWARDS! there is plenty of space on the nut side.

you need 16mm and 15mm sockets, fixed spanners and an impact wrench or breaker bar. Also an E12 socket.

I will use my one-hand, reciprocating Rigid saw to cut the bolt.

I bought ten 10.9 high strength bolts as spec'ed in video on Ebay for $10.
