Rattle noise on w164 during cold start only

Hi guys,

During cold start there is a rattle noise which goes away after 2 second. After that the noise does not occur during the day anymore as long as the engine will be running hot, otherwise if its get cold it will do it again. I read somewhwere that if you apply some pressure to break pedal before turning the car on will make the sound go away but no luck for me. At least not the entire sound has gone away.

the model is w164 350 CDI 2010-2011

thank you for all your help!

When I bought the car years ago, I also noticed the noise only when cold. I have researched the problem on various forums and it seems to be a common problem. In my case the sound is louder and dangerous and there is an Engine Oil Pump Pickup Tube Gasket problem. I've driven 50K miles since I bought the car and so far it's still running. The gasket is probably worn out and during the initial cleaning it lets in air before it's filled with oil and therefore the noise. Maybe you have another problem, I'm just sharing my experience.

In this case, to fix the problem I described 1. This o ring part is needed for $10. 2. Service charge for oil pan and gasket disassembly and assembly. Also check and adjust this o ring. Also keep in mind that it is better to do this procedure when the oil change is due. And when you assemble it, you will change the oil there. If you don't do this, after removing the oil pan, whatever oil spills should be poured back. so the prices depend on which country you are in.
My advice: if the car is working normally, do not light any checks. Does not write any errors on diagnostics. No exhaust or detonations. Then it's not worth breaking anything because of that sound. If that sound gets stronger and some other serious problem is not revealed, you won't know for sure until then.
If you are not going to sell it, in my opinion it is better to hang it up and forget it. But if you are going to sell soon and the noise has increased, you should find out (because it is hard for the buyer to believe when he hears a noise that there is no problem . P.S. In general, old cars make strange noises on cold start and it's acceptable like old people coughing.

Thank you. Yep the car runs fine and no other issues with it. Will probably keep using it until the next oil change date will come due and will replace what you have said. Thanks again and God bless you!

It doesn't seem that bad to me in all honesty. I wouldn't throw money at that.

True, the car engine runs great and no lights on dashboard and no fault codes were found. Will probably leave it until the next oil change date.

Thank you

Have it checked by a shop. It sounds a lot like a "stretched" timing chain as well. Our 2011 BlueTec has been though two timing chains (70k & 140k). It will also eat away at the other sprockets while out of spec. If it is the chain have the shop use a scope and inspect the other sprockets when changing the chain.
