Mercedes Transmission Limp Mode Breakdown While Driving

Hello,

I have a 2008 Mercedes Ml320 CDI which 2 weeks ago broke down while we were driving . It still drove when it broke down so I was able to park in a safe location but after turning it off and on now it just makes spinning and grinding noises which I have demonstrated in a video in my garage.

fast forward to today I have received a iCarsoft 980 scan tool which I can read codes from TCM and ISM etc. the scanner shows zero codes in the TCM and zero codes in the ISM I still cleared both just for good measure.

it does have a couple codes I was already aware about which are a MAF sensor reading slightly above normal and a steering angle sensor code causing the esp light to stay illuminated. I’ve been driving with both codes without any issues at all.

After clearing all codes the problems persist and it sounds like it’s making spinning noise in neutral gear and louder spinning/grinding noises in park so I shut the car off quickly to prevent further damage.

Any idea or tips are greatly appreciated. I’m currently trying to figure out a Jack or lift situation as my 2 ton Jack was not able to even get the front tire of this SUV off the ground (max lift height 13 inches and the suspension hang is insane) so I’m not sure a 3 ton Jack with 20” of lift would be enough for me to squeeze underneath the car.

thanks for reply. The repair does not seem easy for that at all if you don’t have a lift. Looks like the whole 200lbs transmission will have to be dropped out of it. It’s not super heavy but hard to do alone and without a lift.

I don’t have any lift in my garage so unfortunately today I have just listed my beautiful Mercedes for sale for a lot less than I bought it

Yeah, I don’t care what you drive, you always need a good mechanic available to help out with the bigger projects.

Best of luck with the sale.

Do NOT get under a car that is only supported by a jack.
Jack stands are cheap. Funeral homes aren't.

The first thing I would have done is to check the transmission for the transmission oil level and clogged filter. I would in any case replace the transmission oil and the transmission oil filter. There is no dipstick on the transmission and to change the transmission fluid is a bit of a process, The process is described elsewhere in these forums. To check the oil level is a little involved. Note that this transmission takes a very specific transmission oil you can get from the MB dealership or you can order it from a place like Pelican Parts. Do NOT use regular ATF (red automatic transmission fluid).

It's worth giving the transmission a full oil and oil filter change to see if that fixes the problem before simply selling the vehicle. I have the exact same vehicle - it's 15 years old now, I've had it for the last 10 years. It still looks fantastic and I still love it!
