New to me ML550 and SL550
#52
Well I got the SL home.
Had to rent a trailer as mine was buried in snow
Everything worked out. It is at the mechanics.
Hopefully they don't find anything major that the mice have gotten to.
The driver seat has a little bit bitten away on the perforation.
Only thing I have done lately to the ML is the wipers. Waiting to get the SL running and then we will register together.

And I see you found the tow hook for the SL.

Put new tires on today. Boy did they really need to be changed. Good thing I didn't drive it much. Guy said I wouldn't have made 10 miles.
I need to purchase an oil filter wrench. I am getting a bunch of different answers. Does anyone know what size wrench I need ? I have read 74mm and 86mm and 64mm. Confusing. They all say will fit, but theres no way. I got one of those universal type, but there is no room on the 550.
Thanks all

What tire brand did you put on the ML? I am sure it rides MUCH better now as well.
Regarding the oil filter wrench, sorry, I am of no help as my trustworthy Indy changes my oil.

I put falken's on there. I need a good snow tire for Tahoe.
Ran into new problem. Not sure if I should start a new thread.
I am not finally able to drive the ML, everything was great. Then, on my way home, she would only shift into gear and stay in 1st gear.
It is not shifting.
When I do shift into D or R it is a pretty hard shift into gear

You'll need to pull the fault codes, but your conductor plate may have given out. Sometimes it's the transmission shifter battery, but I believe you put a new one in so that shouldn't be the cause.
It could also be the transmission oil if you haven't changed that yet. Mine started shifting roughly even though it only had 5k miles on it. I suspect it was because they put cheap generic oil rather than proper MB spec oil. Changed it out for proper MB spec oil and it's much smoother.

In case you missed my edit, it can also be your transmission oil.

At least it doesn't seem to be a mechanical issue. Could still be the conductor plate being on its last legs but try everything else first.

Getting closer in diagnosing the problem.
Replaced the aux battery and she seems to shift from N to R and D smoother. When I took out the old battery and tested it, it showed .28V. The new one showed 12.86v. Safe to say that the old one was dead.
Decided to run the same exact route and do the same exact thing that I did the other day. Which was start with key, drove approx 8 miles. Stop for a few minutes. Start back up with the keyless GO, and bam. Not shifting out of 1st.
Turned off and then started with key and now I'm back to shifting. It has something to do with the Keyless GO. Is there a trick to this? I am fine with having to start with the key everytime. I would just like everthing in the car to work.
Still going to do a trans fluid service.

Looks like I will be needing to replace the output speed sensors. That is what is causing my trans problems. Almost got stranded today. Transmission seems to have a mind of its own.
Sometimes this thing feels like a rocket. Sometimes its a dog. Sometimes it never shifts out of 1st
I think it is inside the transmission, so a job I cannot do (I don't think)

The owners manual has some of the info but from memory:
Engine oil: 9.5 quarts of oil that meets MB 229.x spec. I use Mobil 1 OW-40 European car formula and the engine in my former GL550 was still going strong at 250K miles.
Rear and front differential: 1.2 qts. of your favorite GL-5 lubricant each.
Transfer case: <1 qt.of MB ATF fluid. Which one depends on your VIN. The dealer or a parts place like FCP Euro can give you the correct fluid based on VIN. Even though this is "lifetime fluid" per MB, you'll be replacing the TC if you follow their advice.
Transmission: Like the transfer case, fluid depends on VIN. There are two types and you'll need the "later" version based on being a 2011. I forget the number of quarts needed with a pan drop and filter change, but I think it is 4-5 (the transmission holds ~9 qts). A fluid change requires a fitting that screws into the drain hole to fill and a way to measure ATF temp to measure level.
Congrats on the purchase, I've got an 11 ML550 as well I picked up about a year ago after many years of GL550 ownership.

Thanx for the info!
My owners manual is very vague as to lubricants and capacities.
Did the oil change. I have a ml500 also and happens to use the same Mann oil filter.
Next up is all fluids underneath.
Gathering all the needed fluids.
This is a nice one.

Since you're in Pennsylvania, I would highly recommend trying out FCP Euro. Their lifetime warranty extends to fluids as well; after the first change, any subsequent changes can be done for free minus the cost of shipping. FCP Euro is based in Connecticut so shipping should be cheap. I personally haven't gotten the chance to try their lifetime warranty yet but have heard generally good things.

Just wanted to let yall know that I now have no warning lights on my dash. Fixed everything and what a difference.
What a fun car to drive
Turns out I did not have to tear into the transmission. Just wheel speed sensor.
I bought a full set and will be keeping them with me at all times. Just in case.

Regaring wheel speed sensors, carry your scan tool in your car. Then you won't get stranded like I did 200km from home just for a dodgy sensor that put the trans in limp home mode.

Did you get the registration all taken care of as well, all is good to go?
