2008 ML320 CDI re-animating journey!
I have been a silent reader of this forum for many years, but, I think time has come to share my experience with you; A year ago, I made a decision to purchase a setting for sometimes, none working ML (engine rotates but it won't start) as is where is for some reasons of mine, in hopes, that I could use my free time in learning about diesel engines and ultimately get it running again, however I was met with 2 problems: - expensive labor cost and - my lack of knowledge of diesel engines; So, I started by preparing a diagnosis tablet where is has Xentry, WIS and parts catalogue, that connects to the car OBD via openport USB adapter, that way I could find it's problems.
after initial diagnoses, I found tones of CAN errors (was corrected by troubleshooting wires and cleaning corrosion from the large connector under gloves compartment), then, check engine light is on, but no errors from CDI unit.
side note: I guess many and repeated tries to start that car from the battery, with no go, has led to weakening the starter, so, a new battery was purchased and I rebuilt the starter as well, now starting has some oomph

I then, checked low pressure fuel supply CKT. electric pump was OK, replaced fuel filter, still no go ( also although there was no errors from cam, crankshaft, pressure sensors, I check them all for functionality), strangely enough, live data shows no pressure is building up in the rail!
I then removed the injectors and found a blown nose of #4 and #5, I decided to rebuild them all, disassembled, cleaned and I replaced noses and valves, and seated them right and started the car, then, success!
ML has started, but huge cloud of white smoke coming was coming out of tail pipes. the the engine was screeching and it went to overrun, I killed the engine, and it wouldn't start again!
after inspection, a blown #2 injector was found, and from before there was an oil leak was found under the back of the engine on above the transmission, also, evidence the the turbocharger was leaking oil into the intake, now time for a new actions.
This time I decided to buy a whole set of a rebuilt injectors from Germany at reasonable price. second, since I needed to repair the turbocharger I decided to rebuild it with new cartridge, and I might as will replace the oil cooler o rings.
After I finished with installing all, the ML starting again, no error as usual, no smoke! But 2 problems were found:
- blow by at the engine oil cap, and
- screeching sound and rattling coming from the engine!!
I am attaching a video that I recorded to document that sound, perhaps someone kindly points me to the right direction, of what to do next.
thanks.
