Help please... Ripping my hair out!

Hi all,

Have an intermittent fault that is doing my head in!

Sometimes when starting my car, I'll get the ESP triangle flashing. Goes away when I press the brake, but back on when I release it. When I try to drive, it seems to want to start in 3rd gear (maybe 4th) until it moves a few metres, then all goes back to normal.

On occasion, the speedo shoots to the end of the scale and even the odometer starts counting up...

Other errors are at times "ABS not available", "ESP not available", "Tire pressure system inoperable".

These are sometimes all at once, or one at a time.

Some days this will happen multiple times, other days it'll behave perfectly for days/weeks on end.

Twice its refused to go into reverse, and once or twice, refused to engage drive (says it has on the dash.

New battery installed, thought it may have been battery related so tried a second new one - same issue.

No faults whatsoever when it's driving.

Scanned and getting canbus communication issues, along with all 4 wheel speed sensors giving implausible readings etc. Live data when moving shows all seems perfect!!!

Any ideas?!

Thanks heaps in advance

Replace all 4 wheel speed sensors,do not drive the car as it can lock the brakes on you, happend to me,replace all 4 not one, easy and relatively cheap, they might get stuck so heat them up and go slow when removing

Use genuine speed sensors if you can. I believe also that the Meyle branded ones could be the original equipment. Aftermarket ones have shown to be unreliable.

Test your battery and altenator for proper operation. They are known to be culprits with ABS speed sensor issues. The ABS system appears to be quite reactive to drops in voltage. The ESP warnings youre getting (I assume yiur cruise control wont work either) and the transmision are all related to the system reading the correct speed from all four wheels. Thats whats causing your transmission to lock up (assuming the transmission is otherwise OK).

You didn't state how many miles are on your car. Its possible that the redactor ring on the inside of the hubs (which the sensor reads speed from) have worn with age or a covered in dirt, and they're giving false readings.

I'd be scanning again and clearing codes.

Appreciate the responses. Have ordered 4 sensors and will report back once they have been installed.

Once again, thanks heaps!

Spray some parts cleaner down each hole once you've removed the sensors and give the wheels a spin as you do it just to try and remove any gunk that may have accumulated.
