The ML is rated to tow 7200. Just make sure that you get the trailer hitch from the factory because it includes the sway control. I have the trailer hitch. It comes with the ball and everything. It is stored next to the spare.

Performance wise, the ML350CDI will barely notice the trailer even on steep hills. However the fuel bill will rise 10 ~ 20% for moderate highway speeds. My worst figure was 25l/100km for a climb to 1850m with about 1500kg in the trailer. That was at fairly low speed - due to the tight turns on that mountain, not due to engine power.

With my 2008 ML320 CDi I regularly towed a 6,000 lb boat and trailer combo, dual axles. Fuel economy suffers but the diesel tows like a dream even able to accelerate up long steep grades no problem.
