w166 stalling complaint

This might have been posted already but if your NEW W166 is stalling, you need a new high pressure fuel pump. This is looking like a major problem. BMW and other manufacturers are suffering from these crap pumps too. On a W166 the job is involved. I've also seen other problems on these new chassis's that are very concerning.

Is there a TSB or other documentation on this?

No bulletins at this moment. In fact, most dealerships don't know of the cause. I tested the pump and it passed. But the high pressure pump is the cause. It's a very intermittent failure. But surely a dangerous one.

So, if you tested it and it passed, how have you come to the determination that this is the cause?

I'll also add: I have an 08 335i that had very similar issues as what I'm hearing in the other "stalling" thread, at least in one case. Sometimes it would start right back up and other times it would need up to a 30 minute rest period. Sometimes it would run extremely rough and max at 20mph. Sometimes it would go into "limp mode" but would either clear itself quickly or I could pull off and "reboot" the car and it would go away. Other times it took excessively long to crank. I would not be suprised if a diagnostic test indicated no trouble as the problem was intermittant and often/always was fine while in the hands of the dealer.

I had at least 2, maybe 3 HP Fuel Pumps replaced - the last was supposedly a new version and I've clocked about 30K miles since without incident and component warranty was extended to 100K. A successful class-action suit against BMW for owner's trouble resulted in a small check for those who made the claim.

High pressure pump failures and intake valves clogging up are known traits of most GDI motors. Porsche among others is also on the "have issues" list.

NJProTech: what else are you seeing, and does what you see so far affect the BlueTecs as well, or is it just a gas thing?

This chassis seems pretty solid. It's very similar to w164 so much of the chassis is "like" a perfected w164. The problems with direct injected gasoline engines seem to be world wide with all makes. Eventually these intake manifolds and cylinder head ports will get gunky and cause problems. You should see a 642 blue tech diesel with over 50k on it. Looks like brownie batter was poured down intake. GDI engines will be the same.
