Lane Keeping Assist - Is it worth worrying about?

I've got lane keeping assist activated and the indicator says it's working but nothing happens when I stray (on purpose) out of my lane. I read where it needs good lane markers and maybe that's the problem. I've tried it on painted lanes and ones marked with the little reflective bumps but nothing happens. I've been trying to get it to work for days now and wonder if it's worth worrying about. I've read several posts where people deactivated it because it was a pain in the rear. I like my blind spot assist but wonder what you guys think.

I was wondering the same when I fist got my vehicle. I tried drifting but it was too sudden and the system outsmarted me . *It is triggered when I slowly go over the line and I feel the vibration in the steering wheels. It works with both solid or dashed lines.*

The "active" lane keep assist works only on solid lines. It doesn't matter if you drive over it fast it thinks you are changing lanes and just makes the noise. If you go slower it will actually move you bak in the lane.

IMO for the price I would get it fixed.

I also deliberately strayed over the broken lines and felt the on then off pulse as we passed each line segment, then a pause in between.
It still seemed to stay within the lane and keep the car straight, until I forced it to change which it gladly accepted.
That was on the test drive - I am yet to do long distances on the freeway.

I know you're right but I was just wondering if it's something I'm going to disable anyway. I've tried everything including driving down the road with a wheel on the centerline, and on the right side also, and nothing happens.

I have this lane keeping contraption only because it came with blind spot warning, which I see as a good thing. However, I do not see the vibration of the wheel or any control the car has that trumps my decisions as a good thing. I'm not even sure I would like that cruise control assist that speeds you up or slows down based on the car distance in front of you. However, I can appreciate the intent and I can see where in certain cases when the driver is not paying attention that it might save a wreck. Nonetheless, I would probably disable it.

I see lane assist as only an intrusion. I don't want wheels vibrating in my hands or making me move over by pulling me one side or the other or putting on the brakes, or whatever it does. I drive too many narrow, country back roads to fool with that sort of thing as it would be going off in my hands every two minutes. I intend to drive this car without interference of any kind whatsoever from it as far as my hands on control of the car is concerned - for better or worse.

I think the issue is your technique in trying to "test" the function. It only detects casual drifting out of lane. Stop trying to test it and it will surprise you.

I turned it off and will only turn it on during a long highway drive where I was worried about becoming drowsy.

I tried it for the first time under real highway cruising conditions yesterday on a longish drive. I like it.

I tried again today and was very casual drifting out of lanes and nothing happened. I guess it's work getting checked out from what I'm reading.

Resurrecting an old thread - Is Lane Assist actually working?

We got a new 2014 ML350 which only has the regular Lane Assist and have turned on the graphic which shows with green lines when the lanes are recognized.
I have strayed into the left or right lane and have never been able to get the steering wheel vibrate. Doesn't vibrate in adaptive mode or standard mode.

I have the active Lane keeping assist in our SL and that works fantastic & our BMW vibrates excessively when drifting across a lane.

Is this thing broken or am I missing anything? Has anyone else have it work?

My new ML350BT came with this activated but like other I turned it off as it actually worked too well for city driving. I have reactivated it on long trips on the highway but turn it back off for city driving. There is no doubt when it is working.

Interesting.
When I have the lane graphic showing in the center display and both lines are green, even when I drift, the lines stay green (and no vibration).
When the steering wheel vibrates on yours, does the corresponding line turn red? Just wondering as I see them either as green or off.

Thanks

i would get it checked, it is definitely not working properly

I use it when driving long distances.. works great. even on lines that are faint, the lane assist still works.

wait a second, what lane graphic are you talking about? I have that graphic display and it doesn't show anything.

The graphic itself doesn't change but when the camera sees the lanes, they light up in green

Mine lights up green, and the steering vibrates, but I always get the message to take a break at exactly the same time as the vibration. Is that normal?
