Any advise on deleting the running boards?

2013 ML550: Paladium Silver, Brown Satin Ash
Any advise on deleting the running boards?
On the 2013 ML550, the running boards are now standard. Ridiculous, huh? The dealer says the factory can't delete them.
Now I'm faced with taking them off after it arrives, basically do a reverse of what most people do they really want the running boards. I want to put on the standard 'twist bars" found on the 2012 ML550, or the current ML63 or the AMG kit on Canadian MLs.
The dealer estimates it would cost about $2,000 in parts and labor for them to do this. Does anyone have any better ideas?
