Australian delivery.

I have previously added to a thread telling that Australian delivered cars left the States and went via Germany. That was based on the route taken by my W164 in 2009.

However I have now been advised that my new car will be sailing on the "Carmen".

Upon checking its route, its journey began in Baltimore, and has now berthed at Savannah GA, where I presume all Tuscaloosa production may be loaded.

Next stop will Manzanillo Panama, then via the canal across the Pacific to Melbourne (November 2), Port Kembla, Newcastle, and finally Brisbane.

So it will not be here on the original promised date, but the latest promise of November 10 is certainly looking good

Hopefully it will be ML350BT, Palladium with Grey/Black leather, satin ash, CV1 pack, Airmatic, On/Off road pack, HK sound

That is awesome information!

Do we all have access to this? I'd love to be able to track mine as well.

Thanks.

Cheers

Baltimore,I think,is the main US port used by Mercedes...East Coast port,at least...there could be one on the West Coast as well.I know that mine was first sent to Baltimore from Germany.Where is your ML made,Germany or the US? If the US then I suppose through the Panama Canal is the most logical route to take but certainly not for Germany.God,now wonder you Aussies pay three times as much for a Mercedes than we do...all those shipping costs.

At this point all ML's are built in Alabama. I understand that M-B is preparing to have Alabama-produced "kits" assembled in other countries, but for now, I am quite certain all W & X 166's are built in Vance, Alabama. Does anyone know otherwise?

My ML is coming from Alabama USA, as they all are, and have been since the start, I believe. Never heard of them doing any production of ML outside of the US except for some of the old W163s that were built for the European market in Austria. Thanks for your info though. I'd love to find out more about all this and how the shipping process works or anything relating to tracking my vehicle really, so please share anything you know guys ..... cheers from Oz

When the time comes, your dealer will be able to advise the ship your car will be on. Then you google (the ship name), Wilhelmsen, and Melbourne. Work your way through the site and the details will appear.

Listerone:
Our cars may be close to double US costs, but my list of gear was only the "extra" goodies. Standard inclusions are: Command, Nav, Reverse camera, Park assist, Eco stop/start, Electric seats with memory pack, heated seats, mirror pack, Ambient lights, artico leather dash, real leather seats, 20" wheels, BiXenon pack, Driver assistance Plus pack, and many other little items you pay extra for. The CV1 pack includes Sunroof, Keyless, and electric tailgate.

At last Mercedes has recognised that at the top end of the market, you need the top end of equipment. So I am happy to pay the premium.

So how come you didn't get the AMG pack with 21inch wheels and airmatic ?

Or.....should your P1 be SP1 ??

MLee,
I did not order the SP1 pack as I preferred the OnOff road pack. Selection of either of these packs automatically excludes the other.

The AMG trim would interfere with the underbody protection.
The 21" wheels are unsuitable for off road driving.
Airmatic is included in both packs and if you refer to my first post, you will note it was one of the options I listed.

I did not mention P1, I believe that is a US only option.

Don't know what I was looking at.........definitely too many options......it was much easier 30 years ago when I was working for MB

I would have liked the off road option also, but figure I will spend 99% of time on road. May just invest in a set of wheels and tyres for the odd dirt track trip.
Usually do that stuff on my bikes though.. Just back from 9000km trip to cape York..... No way would I take my car there.

Yeah basically 30 years ago, you had a choice of three trim levels. Then the options list was do you want airconditioning, perhaps floor mats, and to drive off road you bolted on mudflaps!

Fortunately things have changed.

Hello mate, good to see another Aussie on here. Sounds like you're the same as Ian & I and patiently waiting on arrival of your new ML too. Your trip to Cape York sounds really good. If my ML arrives before Christmas (it's doubtful I've been told) we are planning on doing a trip from Melbourne via the Birdsville Track to Cairns and then via the coast back down to Melbourne over 3 weeks in January. If so we'll also zip up into the Daintree for a few days, so the ON/OFF Road pack could be handy. Might tackle Cape York one day but I don't think you'd want to take an ML up there, I'm sure it would be quite capable but you wouldn't want to scratch it. Sounds like it could be Land Cruiser job. Happy motoring, cheers!

If you do venture up Cape York, there's no worries about scratching it. The road was put in by Douglas MacArthur in 1942. Since then for much of it, the only maintenance has been the corrugations which are still under construction. As a result, vehicles have gone wide to minimise the bounce meaning the track is now very wide. Only problem will be the creeks, but with Airmatic up full, you should be fine. The water is not deep but the wheel ruts are.

One thing you will probably appreciate is the dust/pollen filter to keep the bulldust out. I have never had the opportunity to test my W164 under those extreme conditions.

Birdsville will be a cinch. They have graders over those roads once a year.

You could drive a Toyota yaris to the top if you wanted to, but no way will I ever do it in any of my cars.
......you never get the red dust out
......the corugations are worth about 5 years wear on the whole vehicle.
..... Places like Archer River have junk yards full of stuffed 4x4s. Roll overs, broken chassis, etc etc.
The grey nomads are great. The 4x4 goons are insane and dangerous.

Hire a 4x4 in Cairns and pay for the full insurance

Yeah but there are no chiropracters or physios north of Cairns. The hire vehicles have no creature comforts. Great for young backpackers maybe but not us old *******s.

(I congatulate the automatic moderater for correcting me for suggesting I have dubious parentage.)
