Floor Mat Recall

The MBWorld editor put this out last August but because, according to the article, the recall was not expected to begin until Sept I thought I'd post it again. I picked up my ML on Sept. 21st and my dealer still says he has not heard anything about a recall.

Recall: 2012-2013 Mercedes-Benz ML350 / ML550 / ML63 SUVs - Floor mats NHTSA Campaign ID #: 12E028000

This campaign references an "all season floor mat". I wonder if this is a rubber floor mat versus the more common carpeted floor mat that most of us receive with our MLs. ??

I believe so. I looked on the M-B site "Build you own ML" and they used to be listed as an accessory. Now they are not listed at all.

i brought mine to the dealer and told them about the all weather floor mat recall - and they sent me home stating there is no offical recall on our ML and told me to take them out and put them in the trunk.. nice!

My dealer wasn't aware of a recall either, but did comment that the all weather mats were suddenly no longer available for ordering. They weren't offering to replace them, but did give me $100 off the floor trays (which I was considering anyway because they cover the carpets better).

I talked my dealer into giving me the four all weather rubber floor mats as a "good will gesture" when I picked up my ML350 in May because of an unexpected two week delay in the car coming off the assembly line. He agreed and installed them while I was doing the paper work. They have been fine and I like them a lot. I won't bring them back unless I get a piece of paper from MB telling me they have officially been recalled - even then I might not.

I called the parts department at my local dealer today. He said they had no all-season floor mats for the 2012 ML in stock (and, they have been out-of-stock for a long time). He said they expected to receive them by November. He was unaware of any "recall."

The following is a direct quote from the Washington Post of August 13, 2012.

"Mercedes-Benz is recalling 8,675 model-year 2012 and 2013 versions of the M-Class SUV equipped with accessory all-season floormats because of a lack of clearance between the mat and the gas pedal, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In the affected vehicles, the floormats may not fully conform to the floor of the vehicle and could trap the gas pedal. This could lead to unintended acceleration and a crash. According to Mercedes-Benz, applying the brakes steadily will stop the vehicle.

The automaker will notify owners starting next month, and dealers will replace the mats free of charge. Owners can call Mercedes-Benz at 800-367-6372 or NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 for more info."

And this is from the NHTSA web site:

"Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
MERCEDES BENZ / ML350 2012-2013
MERCEDES BENZ / ML550 2012-2013
MERCEDES BENZ / ML63 2012-2013
Equipment Brand Name / Part No. or Model No.: Production Dates:
MERCEDES-BENZ / ALL-SEASON FLOOR MAT Information not Available
NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 12E028000
Summary:
Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain accessory all-season floor mats sold for use in model year 2012 and 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class vehicles. This all-season floor mat may not fully conform to the contour of the vehicle's floor plan as intended. Clearance between the mat and the gas pedal may be reduced, possibly allowing the pedal to become trapped.
Consequence:
This interference could prevent the gas pedal from retracting and the vehicle may not decelerate as expected when the driver lifts their foot from the gas pedal, which could increase the risk of a crash. Should the pedal become trapped, steady application of the brakes will allow the vehicle to be brought to a stop.
Remedy:
Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the floor mats free of charge. Until replacement mats become available, consumers are advised to remove their floor mats from the vehicle. The safety recall is expected to begin during September 2012. Only vehicles equipped with the accessory floor mats are affected. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz for more information at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov."

I called the M-B number on the NHTSA report and was basically told that any recall was VIN specific. I mentioned that because I got the mats from the parts department instead of ordering them as an accessory with the vehicle there was no way M-B could know that my vehicle had them thus it could not be VIN specific. The reply was that M-B would have notified the dealers but having visited the dealer today they still knew nothing about it nor could they find anything in their computers. Of course the final suggestion was that if I did not feel safe to go back to the dealer and have them "inspected". Go figure!!

Well, if the recall is VIN specific there is no way MB even knows the dealer put them in for me. As I said above, I told the sales rep I expected them just to give the mats as a "good will gesture" because of an unexpected delay in the delivery of the car. I am sure they are the same mats I would have received if I ordered them with the car as an option. All I can say is that I have "inspected" them myself and they are just fine!

I took a look at mine and as long as it does not slide forward 1/2 inch and I do not 'floor it' it should be OK. But I can see how it could interfere with the accelerator if the mat slides forward. Beings that the mat is snapped down that should not happen.

I just received a letter from MB Canada today regarding this recall. Told me to book a service appointment so the dealer can inspect and if necessary provide a provisional mat till a redesigned mat becomes available which will be provided free of charge.

Air did you order the mats as an accessory with your car or did you get them from your parts department?

It was one of the "gifts" given to me by my SA when I took delivery of the car.

I think it built into the Canadian dealer expenses. Or so it seems as I did not ask for them. Im sure as with most optional mats you MUST remove the old mats and mount them on the locks. Im sure a few did not do this when NHTSA tested or got reports.
I dont know the process but I know only 1 set of mats should be installed.

Hmmmm my peddle raises fine but the ML still rolls on fine HUGE COASTING range
