First Diesel - Oil Black -What To Do?

I own a 2014 BT diesel with about 4600 miles on it. I checked the oil the other day, and it's really black. This is the first diesel I've owned. Should I get an oil change now, or wait until the first recommended service? Thanks.

Black motor oil in a diesel is normal.

Personally, I do not go by the "recommended" service intervals. I change oil and filter more frequently, especially on a new engine. There are many who would disagree with this, but it makes me and my car engines very happy.

As Dutch says, it's normal. Recommended or sooner changes are a personal preference. Whatever let's you sleep at night is the way to go.

I had the same concerns, but it is normal. Spoke with a senior engineer at one of the major oil companies (a close relative) and he suggested changing the oil more frequently than every 10k miles if I was planning to keep it for a long time (I am).

If you are leasing, then who cares?

Even noted the other day that BMW is backing away from it's long oil change intervals.

First of all, don't use oil. Synthetic is the way to go as it won't break down like oil does. It gets dirty which is why you need to change it, but it will last longer than oil as an effective lubricant.

I think everyone knows we are talking about synthetic motor oil as this is what is required in the bluetec engine.
