Pre-owned sales limitations for outside of region/area?

I live on the West coast and have been in communication with a dealer on the East coast regarding a CPO vehicle they have listed on the mypreownedmercedes.com site. After going back and forth for a little while, I got the following message from the dealer:

"...I do have some bad news. After speaking with my pre-owned manager unfortunately I will not be able to sell you this vehicle if you are going to register it in California. The vehicle must be in service for one year before we are able to sell it out of our area. If anything changes I can certainly get in touch with you and let you know. I do apologize."

Anybody know what this is about? Mercedes restriction or dealership restriction? Why would they list nationally and restrict to local sales? There are tons of 2013 and 2014 models on the site, so it seems odd that such a restriction would exist.

That is odd. I bought my cpo 2012 bletec from NJ and i live in MN. There was absolutely no issues in the purchase. The sales rep. even said they sell alot of vehicles out of state. Our ml was purchased from a large Mercedes dealer.

This was also my 4th vehicle i bought from out of state. Others were from PA, CA, and CO. All were from reputable brand dealers and all went smooth with no issues what so ever.

Maybe there are some new regulations? Seems strange though.

The key words are "in service for one year". It is designed to prevent these 'inexpensive' trucks from being exported to countries where they are much more expensive.

Most US MB dealers are requiring a signed "No Export" agreement on all new GL and ML sales; and are demanding one year Title Lien on all new GL and ML cash sales.

If one of their less than "in service for one year" cars is exported, the dealer is fined $10k by MBUSA and they lose three future allocations. Serious business.

I'm having a 2013 shipped from VA to California (supposed to arrive tomorrow). My guess is this is a dealer agreement to keep cars from flooding one market or another. Kind of like, we went sell nearly new cars in your neighborhood for a year.
