ML63 Delayed Throttle Response
Hi everyone,
I just took delivery of a 2014 ML63 w. Performance Package. So far, I absolutely love the car; it is a beast in all the right ways! Over the 150 or so miles I've driven the vehicle, I have experienced an intermittent issue with the throttle where there is a slight delay between mashing on the peddle and the engine engaging. It was most noticeable when I was doing a u-turn into on-coming traffic. I pressed the throttle, but the engine did not engage. I pressed more and all of a sudden a huge burst of throttle was engaged. I am not talking about turbo lag; rather, the engine does not respond at all to throttle inputs for a few moments and then will suddenly, and strongly, engage. Anyone have similar issues or suggestions on what I might do about this?

It is part of the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) kicking in. My ML350 will do the same thing if you are in a tight turn and stomp the throttle it will wait until you are in less of a tight turn to engage the throttle.

This is a normal trait for this vehicle. It does not get better. You may get used to it but not likely..annoying as it is..I have not, and curse it on a daily basis...it is what it is until MB addresses it with a tranny s/w update or torque convertor. And it gets especially bad in winter conditions coupled with the traction control..a tune does help with better throttle response but it does not go away. MB needs to resolve this...but with a new tranny likely replacing this one don't hold your breath..

Thank you all for your responses. I'm somewhat comforted to know that it's not just my car - but disappointed that AMG (and MB, for that matter) let this out of their shops in such poor shape. I suppose it's a small inconvenience to pay for an otherwise awesome vehicle. I look forward to learning more about my ML and thank you all in advance for the support and education.

BTW, Nanook - beautiful machine you have! Mine looks the same on the outside, minus the mods, and I have the black interior. You garage looks amazing as well! My top spring project is getting my garage cleaned up and looking presentable. I had some remodeling work done over the past year and my garage took a turn for the worse as a result.

Things like this aren't a mistake by MB, they are done deliberately to save the drivetrain. When you have the torque of the ML63 or Bluetec ML350 and a heavy car, the drivetrain would be under incredible strain if you were to mash the throttle from a start. In older cars where the throttle body blade was connected with a cable you could open the throttle as fast as you pressed your foot down. This is sometimes fun and can lead to nice smoke shows but won't make the drivetrain happy. Now there is a computer controlling the throttle blade and MB has chosen to slow the opening of the throttle blade to bring on the power more slowly even if you were to mash your foot to the floor. Additionally with seven gears the transmission may not have completed all of its shifts if you're braking and then suddenly switch to acceleration. This is another time where the computers would delay the opening of the throttle blade. Rest assured that MB is not the only manufacturer doing this. I have another vehicle that delays the opening of the throttle blade for a moment under various conditions. Unfortunately the only solution is to be able to reprogram the ECM to remove the delays. Those of us that notice the delays are in the minority and I doubt MB or other manufactures will make changes for us.

The throttle delay during cornering has more to do with the higher center of gravity than protecting the drive train.
