2016 ML to see 50 MPG plug-in hybrid?

By Ronan GlonTuesday, Jun 3rd, 2014 @ 1:35 am

A new report indicates Mercedes-Benz will launch a plug-in hybrid version of the M-Class shortly after the SUV is given a mid-cycle facelift.

Expected to land in late 2015 at the earliest, the plug-in hybrid M-Class will be powered by a small-displacement turbocharged engine linked to a compact electric motor likely installed in a purpose-designed automatic transmission. Electricity will be stored in a lithium-ion battery pack that will be large enough to propel the M on electricity alone for short distances and at low speeds. Alternatively, the M is expected to return up to 50 mpg in a mixed cycle with both power sources running.

The fuel-sipping ML will go head-to-head against a growing number of plug-in hybrid competitors such as the upcoming BMW X5 eDrive, the second-gen Volvo XC90 and the next Audi Q7.

Look for additional details about Mercedes' first plug-in hybrid SUV to emerge when the facelifted M is unveiled at next year's Geneva Motor Show.

Plug-in Push
The news of a plug-in hybrid M-Class comes as little surprise because the Stuttgart-based automaker has previously announced it will focus on plug-in hybrid technology in order to meet the strict emissions regulations that will come into effect across Europe and the United States in the coming years.

In addition to the M-Class, the automaker will launch a plug-in hybrid version of the S-Class next September and a plug-in hybrid C next year. The next-gen E-Class is expected to get a fuel-saving gasoline-electric drivetrain as well.
