Angry Oil Filter

The oil filter on my 2014 ML350 is in the upper front part of the engine. It is all most vertical ! It is looking at you when you open the hood. My question is: what keeps the oil from making a big mess when you unscrew it ?

Oil Drains down

With no oil pressure - oil drains down into the pan. I have changed the oil on an ML350 Bluetec. Car must be on ramps or elevated to allow for the cover shield to be removed. Then drain the oil then remove the oil filter.

Cheers.

Smile Removing oil filter

I guess it will work with gravity even If I'm not taking out the drain plug but extracting the oil thru the dip stick using a pump so I don't have to get under the car, I'm getting too older for that at 79!

Now I'm not sure with the diesels(just purchased one recently)... but with the 'gasser' 350GLK, remove or loosening the dipstick will allow the oil to drain back to the pan. Surprisingly, the dipstick has a good enough seal that will create a vacuum, unless loosened! Some only check/remove the dipstick ONCE, resulting in an improper reading... One must remove, give it a minute, then reinsert and remove again for a proper reading...
When changing filter, remove dipstick and then loosen filter cap slightly, to allow filter oil to drain down to pan
