BTW - i just registered my MBZ's on Mercedes-me. not sure if they can do the build sheet - BMW did.

Hello everyone.

I recently purchased a 2006 MB SL500 in excellent condition and have been enjoying it for 3 weeks. I have been reading quite a bit about these cars and the more I discover the more I like it.
This is my first MB of any kind and I have owned 2 Corvettes, 2 Allantes, 2 Eldorados and a 2006 Mustang. All of which I treated as "Hobby" cars.

I do most of my own general maintenance and have a four post lift which helps a lot.

I see that several people have asked for a data sheet which seems to be the same as a build sheet. I am putting a book together to display at car shows and cruise-ins and would like a copy of the data sheet for my car to place in the book. Where do I go to get one?

Thanks for the help. I really enjoy reading the maintenance tips and solutions to problems on the site.

Marketing and design gurus probably invest a lot of time on launch editions - "You only get one chance to make a good first impression!" I owned a '16 AMG GTS Ed1 and I think it still looks terrific. I looked at cars on Auto Trader nationwide. There are several ED1s and they are locked $ for $ in the midst of other 2016s from about $89K down, even one with 1,367 mi at $87,500. I think it's like the model home that sells new at a higher price than similar layouts because of upgraded finishes, but years later, there's no premium. The house that looks the best and is in the best condition will likely sell most quickly among similar designs. So I don't think the Ed1 is carrying a premium, but I would think that GTRs and GTR PROs will depreciate at a slower rate than GTs/GT S/GT Cs, but in about four years when the less expensive models will have bottomed out (like the '16 GT S and 8-10 y/o 911s, the dollar difference between the ranges will shrink and the buyers will decide based on condition, colors, wheels and other aspects of personal preference.

I think benzbell's GTR/GT3 RS comparison is really good and I appreciate the detail. My experience is very similar comparing my '16 Ed1 (traded for a DB11 launch edition) after a bad experience trying to order a GT C Roadster from my local dealer) and the '15 Turbo S (991.1) that I had at the time and which I traded for a 991.2 GT3 in 12/17. The AMG is far more practical than the Porsche GT3 without losing thrill to drive factor. When we had the GT S and the Turbo S, I never felt that I wanted to be in the other car when driving; the Turbo S was faster and more nimble, but too quiet and as some have said, "too perfect". The GT S was raucous, rough riding and felt as if it was gobbling up the road in front of it. Plus, traveling from SoCal to the Performance Driving Academy at Laguna Seca, we were able to pack an incredible amount of stuff under the hatch. Also, the AMG GT S/911 Turbo S ratio of looks/comments/high-fives was 100/1. It actually was comical and fun.

Last year, while still in CA, I tried to do a deal trading in the DB11 for a GT C or GT R because, like benzbell, I miss having an AMG GT car. But I was too underwater on the DB11 having traded the Ed1 before lease end. I plan to keep the 911 GT3 as I love the NA, 9,000 RPM motor (I know - it's 1st then 2nd then illegal), the nimbleness, amazing steering/handling and CC brakes. As benzbell mentioned, forget comfort features like keyless go/trunk opening, 256-way power seats, defeatable start/stop (nice in 90 deg CA weather at a 4 minute red light), parking sensors, etc. BUT, OMG, I love the car. The DB11 will be off lease in a few months, but I'm now in a climate where pairing the GT3 with an AMG GT car will have to wait as I'll need AWD here and when visiting our families in Upstate NY. There is so much to like about AMG GT cars and Porsche 911s that either can make a sportscar enthusiast happy. Hopefully the AMG BS will be closer to the GT3 RS and the next Turbo S will be closer to the GTR in terms of exhilaration.

 

I just picked up a w166 2014 ml350 for my wife and trying to figure out if it has keyless - go option. All the MLs in this thread seem to have it so it gives me hope, can someone please run this vin?

You really dont need to go through the build sheet in order to see if it has. It's a simple visual guide you need to check for the following

1. Do your door handles have a groove in them (it's a small box shape on each of the four doors)?
2. Do you have the push button to start the car? (when you picked it up, did the dealer gave you the button?)
3. When you open the rear hatch, does one of the buttons have a padlock logo?

1. I have the small box only on the drivers door handle
2. The car was private party and didnt have the push button already... i saw one for sale which led me to find about about this option
3. The trunk button inside the trunk doesnt have a padlock

It looks like my wife will be stuck pulling the key in and out of her purse

 

1. what you have is a small black box next to the door ( i had a E350 w/o keyless so i know which is which)
2. Newer mercedes benz will start with the push button that doesnt have the keyless feature. Its like this inside my moms 16 S550, she doesnt have keyless but has the push button;
3. If you really want to retrofit it and have the money, there is a company that does it, now if the limitations apply to the ML350 i cant say. I dont remember which company it was.

To be honest, you are a bit safer w/o the keyless feature than with it. Now i know its convenient to get in and out of the car and start/stop the car with it, but the fact that nobody can
steal your car while your asleep, should give you an extra feeling of security. Lately people have been stealing cars w/the feature.

 

It’s likely not worth the time or money to retrofit the car with this feature so she’ll just have to deal with it. As for security, since the cars not rare at all, if someone wants to steal it that bad, they can have it!
