2015 ML350 BlueTEC Brakes & Sensors

Hi All,

I'm a new ML owner, above model (for less than a year) and have a question about brakes & sensors. It's a Canadian build.

I'm in the US on vacation and took my ML to an MB dealer for the Schedule A service (better price down here even with the exchange and it as due). At inspection I was told my brakes, both front (pads & rotors) and the rear rotors needed to be done as only 4mm left on the front rotors and 1mm left on the backs! All this at <22,000 miles or <38,000 kilometres. In all the report said less than 20% all around.

Price for replacement is $1065 USD for fronts (pads & rotors) and $475 USD for back rotors only.

I have three questions:

1. If my brakes are so bad why didn't the brakes wear sensors give me any warning?
2. What level of wear are the brakes at when the brakes wear sensors give you the warning?
3. Does anyone know (Canada-wise) if I have the brakes done by a 3rd party will this for warranty? Looking strictly at price on this one!

My drive home from US location will be about 2800 km (1700 miles) but still have 10 days here so another 200-300 miles more.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Go Oilers Go!!

They saw you coming----get the A service and forget about the rest---remember you have brake ware sensors that will alert you to the pads!!

You'll definitely be able to pull 4000km more on these brakes. Especially in North America where it will be maybe highway mileage. I'd advice to get the brakes checked at another place on arrival.
Also, note that the wear sensors are on one pad only per wheel. It can also be that the sensor pad is less worn than the other on each and every wheel... But that is highly improbable!

Thanks All.

That's kinda what I was thinking too - they saw a newbie owner and maybe thought I wasn't are of the brake sensors.

Will see what happens over the next few weeks as I plan to drive back to BC.

Hi again,

Carrying on with this what recommendations does anyone have for replacement brakes and rotors for this vehicle?

Current are stock MB OEM from original build. That said I'm sure there must be better after market products. Brake dust is a real issue with the MB pads and I'm given to understand MB uses a softer metal rotor to improve stopping, hence these wear down faster.

Any help or ideas appreciated!

There are advantages and disadvantages to each pad type. Do online research yourself.

1. For normal driving, I suggest ceramic brake pads. It is claimed to have lower brake dust. And the dust is much finer and lighter in colour so less wheel stains. Ceramic pad is composed of Ceramic and copper material. All major aftermarket brands all stock them.
2. Disc - try to find one that has painted hats or zinc coated, which reduce rusting. Zimmermann rotors will be on my shopping list when it is time.
