Groaning/vibration when brakes applied

Over the past week or so, our ML350 ('14) has developed a low-speed groaning/vibration below 10 mph when the brakes are applied. Doesn't matter if going forward or backwards. The noise is coming from the rear. My inclination (with 35k miles) is rear pads but it's not a sound I'm accustomed to when the pads are shot. Is this likely what it is or is something else going on? I'll be taking it in anyways this week for a pro opinion.

Could be the pads, or could be that the rotors are wrapped. Maybe there is something stuck between the pads and the rotor as well, it happened to be once after driving through some deep mud. The sound stopped by itself after a couple of days. If it lasts longer, it's probably a good idea to take the brakes apart!

Thanks Mate. Turns out the rear brakes were shot so got the pads and discs replaced.
