2012 ML 350 4Matic - Not able to close trunk tail gate from the inside button

I am not able to close the rear tail trunk gate from the inside button next to the driver seat. I was able to open and close from the fob, open and close manually from outside. I am able to only open by pressing the button from inside but not able to close though. What may be the issue? Is it something related to programming the button?

What I found on the forums was that the trunk would close when you actually have the fob inserted to fully ON mode (click fully to the right on the ignition). It would not work with the press button start with just the fob inside, say inside your pockets with you in the car.
Interesting design if its indeed designed that way.

I noticed the same thing, the car has to be on in order to turn to close it from inside the car.. I guess its because they dont wanna hit peoples head and want to make sure someone is
physically standing in the back of the car
