What does the ECO do?

What does the ECO do?
Hi - just wondering if the ECO does more than switch off and on the engine whilst stopped? . Starting the engine is when most engine wear occurs, albeit a hot engine. I switch mine off as I find it really strange to sit at the lights without the engine running! Does it help with fuel economy in any other way? I have a petrol/gas version as you pay extra tax on diesel in New Zealand.

that's really all its for.. i mean i had it on the W212 (e350) i had and all it did was turn on/off when i was stopped at a red light or parked. I dont think it helps with the fuel economy much. in the US the only ML that has it is the 400/63(not sure on the ML550)
Also the ML250 BTC, dont remember if the ML 350 BTC has it as well, forgot to add it for the people who like diesel
