is the 20" wheel for looks only or is there any benefit to the larger wheel?

Looks, Larger rims usually require wider tires, which will make it ride rougher.

It is not always a style choice. The rim size is also dictated by the size of the front brakes. On my ML63, you might be able to squeeze 19" wheels over the brakes, depending on the wheel itself, but 18's would never clear the brake calipers.
