Tailgate does not work

Hey guys,

2012 ML350 owner here.

My car just hit 110k and going strong without any major issue. However, just today, when I tried to open the trunk, it didn't do anything. I got inside the car, turned on the engine and tried again using the switch on the driver's side door. Still nothing. Turned the engine off and got out of the car and used the remote to open but still nothing.

When I open the trunk, it unlocks and turns on the back side of the interior light with the sound of unlocking but it won't open nor hear the tailgate strut running. Also, I don't hear that chime (ding ding) sound it normally makes while opening or closing the tailgate.

I don't know if I've explained fully but has anyone experienced this issue? or similar to it? if so, what was the solution to fix the issue? My extended warranty just ran out and I want to check for all the possible causes before visiting the dealership.

I'm having the same exact symptoms with my 2013 ML350. Oddly enough, it started happening immediately after the battery went dead and needed to be jump started.
I've checked all 3 fuses, reset by holding the open/STOP button for 3-5 seconds (and hearing the 2 chimes), all to no avail.

If anyone has any additional tips on troubleshooting to isolate the cause, I would greatly appreciate it!!

Same issue here

I’m having the same issue on my 2013 ML350. I checked the fuses and I can also hear the relay behind the fuse box that’s underneath the rear passenger seat click but but won’t open or close automatically. Did you guys ever find a solution? Please help!

I had the same fault recently.

My car had to go to the dealer for an unrelated check and I had them look into the problem.

The report was the strut was open circuit and needed replacement.

I purchased a pair of used struts and replaced them and have had no further problems.

The Dealer didn't charge to look at it and report. Pretty good service I think.

Just an update - had to visit the dealer and they confirmed the spindle had failed and needed replacement.
$709 parts + labor.

It took me about an hour to replace both struts, and I had never done it before.

My Dealer recommended replacing both at the same time.

I purchased them off eBay and fitted them with basic hand tools.

Nothing hard or difficult.

If the Dealer charges more than an hour to do it he's robbing you.
