W166 Musty air smell. Permanent fix.
I have been working on fixes for my 2015 ML350 with 50k miles since I realized I am going to have to keep it for a while since they have such a low resale value.
Posted this a few months ago in another forum but thought I would share it here.
I have many more fixes to come as I have a laundry list of items to solve.
Thought I would share how I permanently fixed my ML350’s smelly air. And no, I did not sell the car.
After two smelly ML’s (2012, 2015) I went on the hunt with trial and error.
This WILL work on a ML or GLE. Should work on others.
First and foremost, when going through a car wash always put your air on recirc. This keeps water from being forced into the hood mounted intakes.
Now, how to fix.
Get two cans of Kool-It.
spray one can up the drain line. It is hard to get to on a ML, especially if you have a 4 magic, but it is worth the hunt.
spray the second can down the right center vent. Push the hose as far down as you can. Alternatively you can remove the glove box and spray directly into the top intake vent on the air box.
let it sit for 5-10 mins. The. Drive your car for 10 mins with air on Max.
now the secret part.
Purchase these air filters off Amazon and the smell will never return.
i replace the filters every 3-4 months.
