Help in making decision ML 2012 to 2014 ( Non diesel )
Folks, I am not new to Mercedes but new to ML forum. I used to own E320 and was active on forms through another user name but during the ownership of E320 for 5 years I learned a lot, from simple fluids/oil changes to brake, differentials, transmission rebuild. I sold it at 190 K but still, I love to have MB again. But this time I like to buy ML. I am impressed with the design of ML 2012 to 2014. So considering that I am pretty knowledgable in MB but I also understand more new technology is being added to MBs do you think a DIY person like me can own ML. Note I am an IT guy so I am also thinking of buying diagnostic/hacking software for MB like iCarsoft MB II. So here are my questions
1) What ML from 2012 to 2015 has fewer issues. I am not interested in diesel ML
2) Is there any list of most frequent issues listed on this site
3) what diagnostic/hack diagnostic tool is best for ML, I am not looking for other cars which are very expensive something around 300 bucks. As I am planning to own ML so definitely I need to have such tools.
4) Suspension. I know airmatic suspension is quite expensive but plan to replace it with standard one or if there is any reliable 3rd party please share the info. Or how difficult is to repair

Buy the newest, lowest mileage vehicle that meets your transportation needs, in your price range. If that is a 2015 model, then go for it.
The W166 chassis is pretty robust. Avoiding first year production is standard practice, this applies to 2012 models for the ML.
Timing chains on the V8 engines were problematic in the early years of W166.
Timing chain tensioners also had problems in 2012 and 2013.
Look for 2014-2015 M276 3.5L gasoline V6 engine models with steel spring suspension. These are likely the most reliable in your model year window.
