Factory Hitch Cover and Blind Spot Detection

Hi All,

I have the 2014 ML350 and I wanted to cover my hitch with a hitch cover. So I decided to buy a LED light cover from Amazon. When I put that in and connect the wiring of the light to the connection beside the hitch, my blind spot detection turns off (it continuously shows the orange warning lights in the side view mirrors) And gives me a warning on the panel inside that "Blind Spot Inoperative .. ". I understand that it things that there is a trailer attached. Is there a way that I can override that function and still have my blind spot detection to work. right now I have to remove that cable beside the hitch cover to have the blind spot detection back on. But then my hitch cover light is useless.

Any ideas?

thanks

I have a frame I carry a full sized spare on when venturing more than 500k's away (300 miles) and it has the number plate on it and a high mounted brake light.

When plugged in the Blind Spot is inoperative so I tend to not plug it in (the high mounted standard brake light is still very visible) and only pug it in of a night.

I haven't found any way of over-riding the system.

You can't over-ride this function. It's how the vehicle detects you are pulling a trailer.

If you ran power out to a separate plug for the hitch cover from the 12volt outlet in your passenger's rear corner it would light up whenever the vehicle was running.

This wouldn't let the car think a trailer was following it.

I did a similar trick to give switched power to activate my Sub which is in the other corner of the rear.

Thanks good idea. Although it might throw off the purpose as with the trailer electrical, it acts as a brake light and as indicators as well (as it has 3 lights on it) Anyway, that's my best bet I guess. Thanks so much
