Is the only way to transfer music onto the head unit HDD by using a CD? Is there no way to move music from a USB Drive to the HDD?

from my understanding the only way is with a CD. You could try an SD card? maybe that will work?

Considering that the available space on the HDD for music is about 10GB, it makes no sense to put in all that time and effort to transfer stuff to it. You're much better off getting a 32GB SD card (it will not read SDHC cards so you can't go higher than 32GB with a SD card), or alternatively use a USB thumb drive which has no size restrictions aside from those imposed by the FAT32 file system. With either one the NTG 4.5 / 4.7 COMAND system can access a total of 256 folders with up to 256 files in each, for a theoretical maximum of of 65,536 tracks.

I use a 128gb USB thumb drive. You will need to use a third party app to format so your ML will recognize it. I use a free app "Rufus". Works great. It's only purpose is to avoid the Windows 10 limitation.

Correct - Windows (7 and up) does not natively allow FAT32 format (it forces you to use NTFS) on anything larger than 32GB, but there are tons of other utilities including Rufus that will do it.
