Intermittant air conditioning shut down
First the resume: I purchased a sweet 2015 ML350 (W166), one owner, Florida vehicle, accident free, with only 19,000 miles in Dec 2020. The car is perfect in every way and has not given me one headache for 6 months. Yesterday we left South Carolina for our first long distance air conditioned trip to Connecticut and about 2 hrs into the trip the air conditioning stopped working for no apparent reason. I shut the system down for about 25-30 miles hoping for a reboot and it worked. Had air conditioning for about 2 more hrs and again it shut down....no air. Shut it off again (about 25 mi), turned it on again and presto....cold air.
I'm dumbfounded !!! Has anyone heard of this situation before and if so what could possibly be the problem. I am mechanically inclined and do a lot of repair work on my own and would appreciate any thoughts or ideas on a possible repair.
I would like to solve this dilemma before our return trip to South Carolina.
Thank you all for your consideration !!
A 5 year old car in Florida with 19,000 miles (very low miles per year) did a lot of sitting around. Not good for sealing components such as o-rings, gaskets and hoses.
Take it to a dealer or independent shop and ask them to look at the refrigerant level. Maybe a simple recharge is all that’s needed. Please report back with your findings.
