Hello everyone this post is a how to replace a window (non-windshield) on a w166.
So my Benz got broken into and my front passenger side window was broken. I contacted Geico for a replacement and they were quick to offer a free cheap replacement window from Safelite but refused to pay for an OEM part. I declined and bought an OEM glass from the dealer myself because I planned on getting the windows tinted, wanted all windows to match, and wanted quality glass.
Please shop around for the OEM glass because prices vary by dealership. One was charging 290, another 250, and one was 212. Obviously I went with the cheapest one because why not.
The stealership quoted me..get this, $916!
Said no thank you and opted to look elsewhere. Other locations charged anywhere from 60 to install it to $590.
Anyway I decided to just do it myself.
Now here’s what you’ll need:
1. A vacuum with a long nozzle to get the broken glass from inside of the door panel and your car.
2. A brush and dustpan for debris.
3. A ratchet, impact wrench, or a drill with a torx T30 bit.
4. Some kind of flat pry tool to remove trim and plastic plugs.
5. A suggested 2-3ft box to hold the door panel in place while removing connection and screws.
6. The replacement window panel OEM part
7. Tape to help you install the new window.
Steps to replace the desired window:
Follow this video as a guide! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nfzxSSmRhag
1. With the car door open, clean and remove all of the broken glass from inside of the car door/vehicle. Be sure to check all sides where the glass will go up and down. Any extra glass will cause the window the to scratch or get caught so be ready to scrape around and remove it.
2. Grab your trim tool and begin removing the speaker. This is pretty easy as you can just rip it off by pulling it from the outside of the vehicle towards the inside of the vehicle. There are three clips holding it in place, 2 towards the back and 1 towards the inside of the vehicle.
Be mindful not to pull the speaker too far as you will have a cable connection to disconnect.
3. You will need to remove the top trim on the door. This pops off pretty easily.
4. You will need to use a trim tool and locate a small panel under the door handle and remove it.
Underneath will be a T30 screw which needs to be removed.
5. Use your trim tool to start pulling the door panel off of the door. It will feel very hard at first but you just need to pop about 8-12 yellow plastic pins holding the panel in place.
Don’t pull the door panel too far as there are several connections you need to remove and also need the connections to locate the glass mount.
1. Start with disconnecting the door lock wire.
2. Then pull the door up to slide the doorlock out of the door panel trim.
3. Do not disconnect any wires yet! You must locate two circular wholes in the door covered with circular plastic inserts. Once located you will take those plastic things off.
4. Now you can see inside of the door and be able to see the vertical metal window mounts. Lower or raise the window until the screws become visible in the circular cutouts.
6. Carefully loosen the T30 screws on each side and get ready to hold the glass if not fully broken. If it is fully broken then it doesn’t matter. You will need to remove and clean the rubber mount to replace the glass.
NOTE: don’t fully remove the screw as things can fall inside of the door panel making the job harder if you dont need to remove it.
7. Now with the glass panel removed or the empty/broken glass filled mounts loosened, it’s time to remove the panel. I recommended taking a picture of the connectors before disconnecting anything on the door. Use that 2-3ft box to support the door while you remove the connections on the door trim panel.
8. Now depending on if the window was fully broken or not, you may have shattered glass located inside of the door. Giving your door a good shake will help you determine if you do or not. If you do have glass inside the door, you will need to disconnect a few more connections on the inside panel before removing it.
9. Remove T30 screws all around the inside panel and use a trim tool to separate it from the door frame. It maybe really stuck on there so be sure to use some force carefully.
10. You won’t be able to remove the inside panel without disconnecting one of the main connection cable that runs inside of the door frame. I personally did not fully disconnect it as I could access the side of the door pretty easily by supporting the inside panel with a box. Vacuum inside of the panel and be sure to remove all of the glass inside. A lot of it can be stuck with n the corners so use the vacuum to get everything and break it all up if stuck in the nook and crannies of the door frame.
11. With the door frame cleaned of debris, remove and clean if necessary the rubber glass mounts which hold the window in place. I used a screw driver to remove the excess stuck on glass. Reinstall when done back to the metal frame when cleaned. Remember to leave it loose to slide in new window.
12. First, reattach interior door panel. Add long strips of tape to help hold the glass in place so you do not drop it.
13. Rotate the glass sideways and slide it into the door frame. Once inside start to rotate the window glass until you see the glass fall fully into both rubber mounts. Make sure everything is aligned and that the weatherproof strips are on the glass correctly. It took sometime to get the strips to stop catching on the glass so be patient and use a friend or the tape to secure the glass in place. For orientation of the glass be sure to reference the rear passenger side to help you figure out how it should go.
14. After the glass is fixed correctly and sitting inside the rubber mounts, tighten the T30 screws on the rubber mounts but DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. You will break your glass.
15. Reconnect the door connections and test the window by opening and closing. At first the window may not fully open if there is any debris near by but it should fully close as normal once the debris is removed. I had to open and close it a few times to remove some hidden glass suck on the sides of the door panel.
16. After confirming the window closes correctly simply reattach everything and you are golden!
Hope this helps someone else and saves them some time. Do not pay the stealership, you can do this yourself in less than an hour! Interior door panel Connection orientation Stealership repair quote
