Has anyone successfully replaced the starter on a ML550 without removing the engine or major disassembly? I attempted to remove it but was unable to get it to clear the aluminum motor mount bracket attached to the block. I don’t see any path to removing the bracket without a ton of work. Called a local Mercedes independent shop they claimed the book says 2 hrs. Towed it to them and they came to the same realization I did. Local Mercedes dealer wants $6200 to replace it! I was considering grinding away a small piece of the bell housing to remove the starter then welding it back after new one was installed. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
