Reseal Upper Timing Covers and Camshaft Magnets

I have a great indie shop near me south of Boston, and they have told me that I have a small oil leak. They provided an estimate for resealing the upper timing covers and camshaft magnets: $1731.12

Seem fair??

MB dealer told me they can do the resealing with about $1500. However, I did myself. Save money!

That's not bad. I'd do the magnets and check back again though. Timing cover leaks aren't really common on these and your car seems pretty new. Camshaft magnets however...

Could you actually take pictures of your engine while it's warmed up and running? I can pretty much ID the magnet leaks for you. DIY is kind of annoying so I'm not recommending it. Sometimes its the sensor too.

It's so brutally cold here I don't see myself out in the driveway taking the engine cover off, but I will ask the SA if the tech specifically saw evidence of leaking in both places. It's a 2016, BTW, with the above-cited 106,000 miles....

Yeah timing cover leaks are possible I've done them but usually its a manufacturer defect that surfaces immediately on a car within 50k or so.

At 106 esp with the weather it's entirely plausible the magnet o-rings are shrunken and cracked. I hate that I'm over on this coast and I'm sorry to add more on your plate but based on my experience its probably just the cam magnets hopefully and we save you a little bit of cash. Also some of those parts don't really like being installed again, pulleys, tensioner, water pump, etc so i'm trying to avoid incidentals with broken stuff too.

FWIW, that's a little more than what the dealerships in the area (i.e., Herb Chambers' Mercedes-Benz) were charging for this job (i.e., ~6 hrs. @ shop labor rate of $170 + costs mostly related to replacement of a bunch of one-time use bolts and gaskets) 4 years ago.
