Oil Dipstick for the M113
Call me an old school kinda guy but when I bought my used '05 S55, I was disappointed that the engine did not come from the factory with an oil dipstick. There was just a cover over the dipstick tube. Maybe the previous owner removed it? Nope. My MB Parts Guy says that the model didn’t come with one standard or as an option. Apparently, the MB engineers believe the in-engine oil level sensors are sufficient. Suppose it would be the case except I prefer to see the condition of the oil as well as the level when I fill the ol' beast with petrol. Not having an oil dipstick just didn't seem right; sort of like driving blind.
So I scoured around a local wrecking yard and found that an engine oil dipstick from an ML430 is the perfect length and a perfect seal fit at the top. Works great. Total cost… $5 and 20 minutes rummaging through the engine storage shed.
Cheers,
Jeff

Since I scavenged the dipstick at a wrecking yard and there is no part number on the unit, I didn't list one in my thread. You could have contacted your local MB Parts Dealer and have them search for a dipstick for an ML430... like I just did. Part number is 113.010.04.79. I didn't bother asking about cost since mine cost $5 at the wrecking yard.
What your post did cause me to do was learn that the short block of a ’02 ML430 is the same as a short block from a ’05 S55 AMG. Not sure if I should feel good about THAT discovery!
Hence the ‘perfect’ fit. Nevertheless, thanks.

Jeff

Thanks. I was just curious of the part number because from the research on the net that I've done, different versions of the M113 have different oil pans. I also found out the workshop tool that MB techs use just measure the oil level in mm's and they use reference charts to determine the level and are different for different years and models of cars. I think I'm going to just mark off the correct levels on my 722.6 tool and use that to check my oil. One mercedes tech said thats what he does with his own personal cars.
I also don't trust my local two dealers too well. I called once and asked about something and they gave me the wrong info. I tried looking them up in the epc but can't figure out how to get to the special tools area. I only seem to find tools in the WIS and currently my copy isn't working.

SPVFD47, understandable about your local MB dealers. As for the potentially different lengths, that's why I supplied pictures of the actual measured length. I agree that without an MB p/n one could not order the right part. But scavenging through a wrecking yard with a tape measure might yield a working stick. Yes, one could use the one-size-fits-all stick (I have one, BTW) and of course, that is a viable alternative. But I personally wanted a stick in the engine and shared my experience.

So i need proper dipstick for 1.8 L supercharged engine.
In my own thread someone listed a tool to measure various engine oil levels but this is just a last ditch effort and an in between oil sensor and diptstick fix.
But like others, im old school, i want an actual dipstick
