CAM REMOVAL

I am in process of removing my cams on my SL 63 M156. Engine is set at 40 and all timing tools lock in perfectly on right side. Before removing, I decide to check the left side and for some reason I can’t get the back tool to lock in. I only can get it in the intake cam and it is slightly off on the exhaust. The Cam Adjuster are in good shape and no slack. The tools doesn’t appear to be bent at all. Am I ok to proceed with removal of both sides and then realign with the tools properly in place when reinstalling?

Also, I turned the engine counter clockwise at one point maybe 1/4” but have since rotated it clockwise multiple full rotations before getting it to land on the 40. Did this mess anything up?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Rod
