V12 Biturbo surging....anyone else get this?

Guys,

I have the exact same phenomena outlined in this post:

Hello all !

I have a 2004 SL600 with about 38k miles on it. It is my first Mercedes and it is by far my favorite car ever. While driving the car seems to surge, jerking me back and forth. It happens usually at 1200-1600 RPMs at about 40-45mph. It does it at other speeds/gears but always in the 1200-1600 RPM range. It is very noticeable, my passenger can feel it without me saying anything.

The RPMs jump about 200 up and down. The speed also jumps 1-3mph. It does it with the accelerator pressed or while coasting.

At first I thought it was the accelerator, but it does it with the cruise control set too.

I took it to the dealership and they couldn't reproduce it. They checked the codes and nothing was set. I've checked the codes everyday and nothing is set.

I am hoping someone here has had a simular problem and can give me some hints to help the dealership diagnose the problem.
I never ever noticed it until I did my exhaust work, making the car louder. I chalked it up to something with my ecu tune, but after doing some research on here, and other forums, it appears to be happening to other, non-modded cars.

Anyone else have this? And if so, what was your fix?

Mines done it as well since bone stock... I just ignore it, dealership couldn't replicate lol! ONLY Happens @ low rpm's w/part or little thrtl little rev blips. Doesn't jerk me around like the quoted post above @ all, just fluctuates about 200 rpm's up n dwn bizarre.

Yep, BINGO. Mine doesn't jerk me around either. But now that I have the SL600 uncorked with no mufflers the couple hundred RPMs up/down is annoying. I never heard it before, with the mufflers in place. Mine happens between 1400-1600 RPM with little throttle in a high gear while cruising slowly. Say, 35 mph or so in a neighborhood. It will also do it while coasting, with no throttle.

With no mufflers, it sounds like "wooooo-uh.....woooooo-uh........woooooo-uh" while it's bouncing.

What the hell could this be?

RE: SL600 Surge

Mine does not surge at all. I saw your post and tested it. Smooth as can be with the....lazy.....stock tune, if adding a tune causes it I'll post it up pronto.

I think I had something like that happen a couple of times (probably over a year and half ago)...but not while in gear. It only happened after start-up in park....the revs increased without hitting the throttle...and then dropped back down to idle after a couple of seconds. Not sure it is the same thing.

I installed a brand new set of BMC air filters and the surging didn't present itself today, when I took the car in for service.

The oem paper air filters that I took out were still very clean.

Weird.

They were very mean looking.

Car is still at the dealer for a small tranny leak, so I haven't been able to drive it. There is a sensor at the bottom of the tranny pan, and the gasket for that sensor is leaking a bit.

I'll probably pick it back up today or tomorrow, and I'll know for sure. Twas encouraging that the issue didn't happen on my to the dealer, as it was completely reproducible every time the car was driven.

Will update....

My car just had the oil changed on Monday and they found the trans-connector gasket was leaking. How much are they charging?

Hell if I know. My car is under warranty, so it'll cost me my $100.00 deductible.

I'll check the invoice when I get it back to see labor hrs and parts cost.

**EDIT**

Just talked to my S.A. and he said that job is about $250.00 or so outside of warranty.

Are gaskets covered under your warranty? Which warranty do you have?

I just looked up mine and it covers transmission gaskets and liners too. For some reason I thought it wasn't covered.

I'm ready to confirm that changing the air filters has remedied my surging issue. I've driven the car three times now since I swapped filters, and the surging was not present at any time during those three outings.

So very weird, as the OEM paper filters I pulled out look very clean.

I don't know if it's the same issue, but sometimes at low RPM it's really touchy and a little jerky, but this could be due to the SB.

My car usually acts weird when you are on the throttle and then you suddenly let go, it feels like it has a hard time down shifting and kind of jerks you forward.

I have the same low-speed/RPM surging in my 2005 SL-600. I have the K&N air filters and it's no different than the stock filters. The BMC's look the same as the K&N's. Think they'd perform any differently? I'd be willing to try them if it would make a difference.

All I can say is that from the moment I installed the BMCs, up until the typing of this response, I have not experienced that surging. It's completely gone now.

Thumbs up Surging/Fix UPDATE...

Surging problem totally gone/fixed, was getting worse before left Coil-Pack (Ignition coils) after replacement under Warranty thank god! repair inc SRS sensor & new struts/shocks for trunk $3000 I paid outt've pocket for brand new direct replacement SL65 Spark Plugs, since they were doing the coils the labor was virtually nill @ least on (1) side of engine...

Now part/full/mid/or lifting from throttle = smooth sailing ZERO RPM surging!!!!

BTW I love my friggin' SL600 more than ANY auto I've ever owned/modded old Spark Plugs (almost 48k miles looked PERFECT Jeremy's ECU tune is obviously making the engine very happy, MB-tech showed me old plugs & we both couldn't believe how good they looked, he said they looked as if off a car w/10k miles just tinge light brown sut, no corrosion/oil/etc...
