Would you mind sharing how many miles the vehicle had when you purchased it four years ago? Did you purchase it from a private owner or a dealer (MB or otherwise)?

Also, do you have all the documentation concerning the maintenance history of the car?

Not a bother at all.

I bought the car with exactly 35k miles from a private party. He had it since new, custom ordered, and serviced at MB dealer. I do not have service history but can probably get it if needed. Under my ownership, I did all the maintenance myself except for transmission oil service and have records of dates and mileage when work was done. I prefer to do service myself as I have a number of cars and dont trust dealerships. Also, I change oil every 7,500 miles or less on all my cars.

Last oil change was done at 59,100 miles and current mileage is 60,123.

Indeed, if the vehicle was serviced by a Mercedes dealer by the previous owner, Mercedes will have a record of them. I own three Mercedes Benz's right now and have owned at least one continuously since 1978 so; I am well aware of the availability of such information. I have actually been surprised at the amount of information applicable to vehicles I own or have owned, that Mercedes has at the disposal of a verified owner and more specifically, a current customer with one of their dealerships.

In any case, I have been discussing the matter with my wife mostly because if I do purchase another vehicle; I will have to make room for it. Deciding which one; is not as easy as it may seem. However, if we can come to an agreed-upon sale, I will need those records from you. I can't obviously obtain them as I am not the present owner of record and as you correctly pointed out, you will have to request them as you are. However, it's not necessary--at least for my sake--for you to request them until you have a firm commitment from me.

I will let you know within the next twenty-four hours of my decision either way as a matter of courtesy if I decide not to go ahead; otherwise, and assuming the vehicle is still available, I look forward to working through the sale/purchase. Please let me offer a suggestion as to how I would likely prefer to move forward since it has worked well when purchasing a vehicle out of state since this would be the case. I am certainly open to any reasonable alternatives you may have.

FYI, I purchased my last vehicle from an owner in Orange, NJ not long ago; and I live in the Intermountain West. I would obviously have to fly back with my wife or one of my sons and call the trip back a "vacation". I hope you will assist me by helping me obtain a temporary permit through your local DMV to be able to drive back home since I will have surrendered your present tags. As to the form of payment, I will send you a significant deposit with the understanding that if the vehicle is not as described, I can reserve the right to withdraw my offer and get a full refund. For the balance, I prefer to go to your bank and present a certified check in your name and ask that an authorized officer is willing to notarize our signatures on the bill of sale and on the title if applicable. I prefer doing it this way so that we can both feel comfortable with entering into a clean transaction and that there would not be any last-minute hitches or misunderstandings once I fly back there. I hope you understand.

As to the form of the deposit; I am happy to entertain any method of your choice given that these days, they are many and are all legitimate. Also, if I do decide to purchase the vehicle, I will likely fly out within a week at the most; likely, less.

I apologize if I am coming across as wanting to put the cart ahead of the horse; I just need to feel comfortable with the transaction once I decide to commit to one.
