Mercedes-Benz S430, S500, S600, and E320 CDI
The Maybach is a wonderful automobile. The problem is that it really ended up being the ultimate S-class, while the Phantom is literally the Rolls-Royce of automobiles. Nothing says "I Have Arrived" quite like a Phantom does, and at that level, you're buying prestige and status. And that's where the Maybachs could not compete, despite the merit of the automobiles themselves.

Yes, no arguement the Rolls presents a striking profile of elegance and prestige. Mercedes made a noble effort with the Maybach but the German Designers and Engineers simply failed to understand the required elegance and visual separation required from their S-Class. However judged on an individual basis of engineering excellence, build quality and materials it is arguably the same league as the Rolls. Today on a used basis the unloved Maybach has accordingly become a genuine bargain.
