Monza Television Coverage

Unfortunately Monza will be shown on ABC as a taped delay, this means a lot of the action and whatnot will be cut down. Too bad Speed is airing the race one week AFTER it is shown on ABC!

I will watch it on ABC, and one week later I plan to watch it on Speed aswell just to hear the witty commentary of David Hobbs.

In fairness,

I have to say that I prefer may facets of the ABC coverage to the Speed coverage. I could do without the 30 minutes of Danny Suliivan, but the RedBull thing is important, and obviously they are providing some sponsorship dollars on track as well as the telly. But last weekend, there were camera angles that Speed has not had, more incars, and I really like the graphics as well. I do wish we could get the audio from ITV or the BBC though, I'd love to hear Martin Burndle. Surely you realilze that they are teasing us with these better pictures anyway; you just know that it's all going to be Bernievision (pay per view) within the next couple of years. I can't imagine ABC being interested enough to take anymore than three or four races peryear; it might get in the way of their IndyWrecking/Rookie League coverage...

You've noticed the one benefit of having races on ABC. The picture/images are so much better because ABC does have access to the Bernievision digital feed (primarily because Americans are used to lots of cool in car camera shots from NASCAR). Eccelstone is allowing this on a major American network to try and make the racing more exciting and get Americans interested in F1. By the way, I've seen an article recently that mentioned that other terrestrial channels were probably going to get better feeds from the digital TV because the subscription service hasn't been doing so well lately. Apparantly, people haven't been that interested in paying to watch Ferrari win every race.

Comparing the two, I agree that the picture quality was better on ABC with the digital feeds. I was also slightly more impressed that the ABC anouncers caught Jarno Trulli's stalling on the grid at the start of the formation lap... an item completely missed by Hobbs, Matchett, et al, on SPEED, until the Red lights were ready to start the race and Trulli creeps up at the back of the queue...

Now, if only we could see the Bernievision video, drop kick the lame-o Danny Sullivan Red-Bull commercial and have the Speed announcers call the race...

Frankly, I really don't care if an American races in F1. Americans were in the game through the late 80's, along with 2+ races in the US, and it never gained in popularity. I don't see anything changing going forward.

An American racing in F1 will not do a single thing for the popularity of F1 in America, unless the driver is Jeff Gordon, Ricky Rudd, or another one of those Nascar drivers.

Jackie Stewart has said he feels that the only American currently racing with enough raw talent to be successful in F1 is Jeff Gordon. Not to say that an American couldn't do it if brought up in the European racing system (as Phil Hill's son is trying to do), he was simply commenting on one of our current drivers making the switch directly.

Danny Sullivan interviewed Jeff Gordon before Monza, and Jeff Gordon said that he would love to drive an F1 car and would leave Nascar in an instant to drive in Formula One.

I just can't see someone with a southern accent in Formula One, lol.

I don't recall hearing him say that. Of course I had to watch the race at 2AM because our local ABC station showed the SFGP bicycle race when it was originally supposed to air - so my memory is a bit foggy. He's been lined up several times to test an F1 car, but it always falls through at the last minute. I think he was supposed to try out the Williams BMW at Indy this year, while JPM took some laps in Jeff's WC Chevy.

I like Jeff - he's a local boy (from Vallejo, CA).
